Verde Tauern: complete guide
Overview
Verde Tauern is a dark green Austrian stone, sold as marble but geologically a serpentinite. It is chosen for its deep colour and veining, suitable for floors, bathrooms and prestige cladding.
History and origin
It takes its name from the Hohe Tauern, a range of the Eastern Alps in Austria, where serpentine rocks of this type outcrop. Alpine green stones have long been used in architecture for floors, cladding and interior decoration. Verde Tauern is valued for its elegant effect and for pairing with light marbles. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Appearance
The background is dark green, almost black in some areas, crossed by light green or whitish veins and networks. The pattern is irregular and can vary greatly between slabs, with calmer areas and others more lively. Polishing enhances depth and contrast; matt honing makes it softer and less reflective.
Uses
Ideal for interior floors, cladding, bathrooms, vanity tops, stairs and furnishings. For outdoor use and heavily used kitchen worktops the batch should be assessed, because some serpentinites change tone when exposed to the weather.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and neutral detergents; dry polished surfaces to avoid marks. A stain-proofing protector is useful on vanity tops and in areas prone to splashing.
