Bowers Whitbed is a classic English limestone quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, in the United Kingdom, where the Portlandian formation has supplied building stone for centuries. This open-textured oolitic limestone shows a warm beige and cream background with a fine, even grain and small shell fragments that give the surface a gentle, natural character, with almost no veining. Its consistent appearance makes Bowers Whitbed ideal for facades, cladding, flooring, steps, masonry and heritage restoration projects. It performs well honed, sanded or bush-hammered, indoors and out. Marmi di Carrara supplies this limestone as blocks, slabs 2 and 3 cm thick and cut-to-size pieces, with photos of the actual slabs before purchase.
Petrographic description
An open-textured oolitic limestone from the Portlandian formation (Jurassic), formed of ooids with a small quantity of micrite occurring as matrix; the elongated to rounded shell fragments are typically about 5 mm across. The stone is generally moderately compacted, although the degree of compaction is variable, and most areas exhibit fairly high intergranular porosity with interlinking of adjacent pores, while in some areas the ooids are fused or surrounded by a sparse carbonate matrix.
Bowers Whitbed is a Limestone quarried in United Kingdom, catalogued in the Marmi di Carrara atlas under the international reference ICGBLS00633. Its dominant tone is beige & cream, with fine grain and a oolitic / granular / compact / massive texture.
Like every limestone, it is supplied as raw blocks, gangsaw slabs in 2 and 3 cm and cut-to-size pieces made in our Carrara plants. Recommended finishes: honed, brushed, sandblasted, bush-hammered, split-face. Typical applications: interior and exterior floors, façades, pool surrounds, garden design, carved elements.
